Prakash Rajpurohit IAS Biography
From Barmer’s Dusty Roads to the Helm of India’s Elections: The Quiet Rise of Prakash Rajpurohit

You know those people who never make a big noise about themselves? They just keep doing the work, day after day, and somehow one day you look up and they’re sitting in a room where the future of the country’s democracy is decided. That’s Prakash Rajpurohit for you.

Who is he?

Born on 28 February 1986 in Barmer, Rajasthan – that dry, hard place where summers burn and water is always a worry – he grew up far away from Delhi’s power corridors. Nothing fancy about his early life. Just a boy who studied hard because that was the only way out. He cracked IIT-JEE in 2003 with All India Rank 4 and went to IIT Delhi for Electrical Engineering. At one of the toughest colleges in the country he didn’t just manage; he did well.

Early life and education

After college he tried the private sector for a bit – worked in an IT startup in Noida. But it didn’t sit right with him. In 2008 he quit and started preparing for civil services. First attempt got him to the interview. Second attempt, 2009, he walked away with All India Rank 2. Mathematics as optional. At 24 he was an IAS officer of the 2010 batch, Rajasthan cadre.

His career started the way most IAS careers do – on the ground. Assistant Collector in Alwar in 2011. Then Sub-Divisional Officer in Ganganagar. After that he became Collector in one district after another – Banswara, Hanumangarh, Alwar, Jodhpur, Ajmer, even Jaipur for a long stretch. He saw tribal areas, border districts, crowded cities. He handled land issues, law and order, development work, and of course elections at the district level. Later he moved to Commercial Taxes and Excise. He also worked on the Jal Jeevan Mission, trying to get drinking water to villages in a state that is always thirsty.

At the Centre he first handled international investment treaties as Director in the Department of Economic Affairs. Then in May 2026 he became Joint Secretary in Defence Production. And in October 2026 the government made him Deputy Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India. His term runs till 8 April 2030. He takes over at a time when the Commission has a lot on its plate.

The man himself

People who have worked with him say he is straightforward. Not the type who talks big in meetings. He likes going to the field more than sitting in air-conditioned rooms. Awards came his way – Best District Election Officer, a state merit award in education – but he never makes a show of them. In a time when many officers love the limelight, Prakash stays low-key. He does the work and moves on.

That’s pretty much the story. A boy from Barmer who studied hard, cleared the toughest exams, worked through dusty tehsils and state offices, and now sits in a position that helps run elections for over a billion people. No drama, no big claims. Just steady work that took him a long way.
